Pac-Man is truly a bit of Americana, and we're pleased to see Namco representing him as such. Video interviews with the original designer, timelines, evolutionary landmarks and a "gameography" of sorts also exist. Pac-Man old-schoolers will be happy to see a spot-on emulation of the original (already unlocked, too!). In terms of extras and replay value, PMW 3 brings a bit to the table. At the time, those titles appeared cutting-edge, while PMW 3 seems a bit too run-of-the-mill in a visual sense. The environments are varied and keep the action fresh, but the graphics don't quite live up to the previous Pac-Man World installments. This can give Pac-Man access to areas or enemies which would normally be outside his "normal" range of vision. Pac-Man can also join forces with his usual adversaries (the ghosts) by temporarily taking control of them. Seeing the Pac dispense bolts from his fingertips (think Emperor in SW: Episode III) is quite a treat. Power-ups are key to any Pac-Man experience, and there are some new sights to behold here. Blitz games should be proud of the responsiveness offered here. The trampolines and control of Pac-Man in general are highlights of the game, as precise jumps and pinpoint starts and stops are all easily accomplished. Also adding to the fun are trampolines, which boost Pac-Man to great heights (and new areas). Pac punches, he jumps, he charges after enemies and can bounce them into oblivion. The moves list, as it were, doesn't consist of anything that stretches the imagination. Pellets, trophies, bonus items and more fall by the wayside as you gobble toward the next level. As you explore the games levels, Pac-Man chomps away at items galore. There's good character control and the requisite menu of platform puzzles. While it might not be fair to say this is like an expansion pack version of Pac-Man World 2, it definitely feels like more of the same. Developer Blitz Games mined the well of Pac-Man World 2 tricks and employs many of them here.

Leaky portals allow the elements of the ghost world to bleed into the real world, and Pac-Man's in charge of locking that down. As is typically the case with such portals, the bridge between worlds hasn't exactly gone through an extensive quality assurance check. Erwin seems to have found a way to open a portal into the spectral world where the ghosts live. The ghosts in question here are, much to nobody's surprise, Clyde, Inky, Blinky and Pinky. The storyline for Pac-Man World 3 is a cross between Ghostbusters and Luigi's Mansion. What the game doesn't do, however, is accomplish much in the way of innovation and fun that might attract new fans to the series. Namco's third Pac-Man World installment solidifies the series as a viable 3D game which can be shared by original "Pac-fans" and their kids. Twenty-five years later, it's still hard to envision any videogame landscape without Pac-Man. As I, and much of the nation, became infected with "Pac-Man Fever," it was hard to envision a future without the little yellow guy. A trip to the grocery store meant Pac-Man while mom shopped. The number of dots Pac-Man devoured on-screen paled in comparison to the number of quarters he whittled from my pockets. That's the arcade where I and other gamers of my small Northeastern Ohio community first met Pac-Man.
